Cuolma

Cuolma is a planning app for high-alpine tours. It opens a GPX file and lays the line on the terrain and aerial imagery of swisstopo, at the finest resolution swisstopo publishes: terrain down to half a metre, imagery down to ten centimetres, twenty-five in the high Alps. Enough to pick out the gully beside the ridge, and the step in the face, before you are standing under it. It works without a file too: a coordinate or a tap on the map, and the area is there. It stays a model. The ground is a height field: it carries no overhangs, and on a steep face the image is stretched across it. A GPX line is only as accurate as the GPS that recorded it. Cuolma shows the mountain as closely as public Swiss data allows. That is not the same as showing it as it is.
