It is driven by the same kind of wavefront description an eye clinic uses — coma, astigmatism, trefoil, higher-order aberrations over a pupil — turned into a genuine point-spread function. Ghost copies, comet smears, halos and washed-out contrast appear for the same optical reasons they appear in a keratoconic eye.
