SmogScanner helps California smog check stations identify vehicles and manage their daily work. Scan or enter a VIN to see vehicle specifications, applicable smog exemptions, the recommended BAR test type, and the rules behind the result. VIN scanning is free and works without an account. License-plate lookup requires an account and is subject to usage limits. Station tools include work orders, estimates, invoices, customer signatures, customer and vehicle records, and reports. Station plans are purchased and managed on the SmogScanner website. Vehicle information uses NHTSA vPIC data. Smog recommendations use California BAR rules. The app provides a link to the official BAR inspection-history website. SmogScanner is an independent service and is not affiliated with the California BAR, DMV, or NHTSA. Confirm inspection requirements with the applicable agency.
