Why Was an App Removed From the App Store? Reasons and a Live List

By KoteLabs · Published Oct 26, 2026 · Data updated Oct 26, 2026

An app you use every day is suddenly gone from the App Store. Search doesn't find it, and the link returns "This app is currently not available in your country or region". What happened, and is it coming back?

It's more common than it looks. In the last 60 days, 4,767 apps disappeared from the US App Store among those we track, including some with hundreds of thousands of ratings.

The most common reasons apps get removed

1. The developer removed it

Developers can pull an app from sale at any time: to rebrand and relaunch it, because it's no longer maintained, because the company shut down or was acquired, or to stop selling in a particular country. These removals are often quiet, and sometimes the app returns under a new name or listing.

2. Apple removed it for breaking the guidelines

Apple can remove apps that violate the App Review Guidelines, sometimes long after they were approved. Typical reasons include:

3. The developer account lapsed or was terminated

Every app is tied to a paid Apple Developer Program membership. If the membership isn't renewed, the developer's apps are taken off sale until it is. If Apple terminates an account for fraud, all its apps disappear at once, which is why you sometimes see a cluster of apps from one company vanish on the same day.

4. Legal or regional reasons

An app can be removed in one country only: because of a court order, a government request, licensing for music or video, or local gambling and finance rules. Our data covers the US App Store, so an app listed here may still be available elsewhere.

How to check whether an app was removed or is just hidden

  1. Search for it on AppMarketSpy. If we track it, its page shows "Removed from the App Store" with the date it disappeared.
  2. Try the direct App Store link. A removed app shows "not available in your country or region".
  3. Check the developer's other apps. If they're all gone, the account was likely suspended or expired.

Will it come back?

Sometimes. Developer-initiated removals and lapsed memberships are often temporary, and we regularly see apps return after a few days. When that happens, the "removed" mark disappears from the app's page. Apps removed by Apple for serious violations rarely return under the same listing.

New apps arrive much faster than old ones leave: 15,348 new apps were released in the last 7 days. See new apps this week.
